Clinical Context

Why Hearing Protection Matters During MRI and Emergency Care

MRI studies can be loud and lengthy. For infants and young children, reducing noise exposure can be an important part of creating a calmer, more supportive medical experience.

BANZ® Infant Hearing Protection has been used by pediatric care teams as part of imaging and care protocols where reducing sound exposure may help support comfort and safety.

Vermont Children's Hospital has used infant earmuffs for imaging studies, and Children's Hospital Colorado has used modified BANZ® infant hearing protection for MRI studies with infants.

Research & Clinical Reading

Infants, Children and MRIs: Why Sometimes the Best Anesthesia Is No Anesthesia

Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In infants and children, MRIs may evaluate headaches, seizures, hearing difficulties, abdominal pain, cancers, and congenital anomalies.

Because of scan length, noise, limited movement, and anxiety, infants and children are often given general anesthesia. However, some pediatric teams have explored non-anesthesia MRI options for appropriate patients.

The University of Vermont Children's Hospital explored "Feed and Sleep" MRIs for infants — timing scans around natural sleep patterns. Children were fed just before the MRI, allowed to fall asleep naturally, protected with tiny earmuffs, and bundled in an MRI immobilizing swaddler.

Their team reported success with infants younger than 7 months and children 5 years and older as groups especially suited for non-anesthesia MRI approaches when clinically appropriate.

There are still many cases where anesthesia may be needed. Families should always discuss the benefits, risks, and care plan with their child's medical providers.
